Teaching Art

ART AND DESIGN 

‘Art is not just a subject to learn, but an activity that you can practise with your hands, your eyes, your whole personality.’  Quentin Black – Children’s Laureate. 

Intent: 

In accordance with the National Curriculum for Art and Design, BarnsburyPrimary School and Nursery aims to ensure that all pupils: 

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences in Art Books. 

  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. 

  • Are exposed to a variety of mediums to encourage their creativity. 

  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design. 

  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms. 

Implementation: 

Key Stage 1 

Pupils should be taught: 

  • To use a range of materials creatively to design and make products 

  • To use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share ideas, experiences and imagination. 

  • To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. 

  • About the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their work. 

 

Key Stage 2 

Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. 

 Pupils should be taught: 

  • To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas. 

  • To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials (eg: pencil, charcoal, paint and clay.) 

  • About great artists, architects and designers in history. 

 

Impact: 

  • At Barnsbury Primary School and Nursery, we follow the National Curriculum believing that the teaching and learning of art, should engage the whole child. Challenging pupils and inspiring a high quality of Art. 

  • It should stimulate and awaken the senses in order to provide a creative foundation to express individualityThe process of artistic creation, should evoke the child’s imagination and should be seen as a fundamental means of personal expression.  

  • The art experience we provide should engage and teach skills, concepts and the knowledge necessary for the child to develop within a creative frameworkIt should not be seen in isolation, or as independent creative skills, but as encompassing all aspect of the world aroundLinked to emotional and physical responses. Their exposure to the various Art Movements throughout history, the artists and their styles, should encourage diversity and experimentation as they discover how it reflects and has shaped our historyIts contribution to culture, creativity and the wealth of our Nation.  

  • Art tuition should encourage and enable children to communicate and express themselves without fear of criticismExpressing what they feel, see and think through various mediumsExploring ideas and various stimuli supplied through a range of media and skills related to all topics covered.  

  • As pupils progress through the Primary School, they should be exposed to learning experiences which will enable them to think more critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design.
