Modern Foreign Languages

Welcome! Bienvenue! Willkommen! Benvenuti! Bienvenida!

We celebrate diversity at Barnsbury. Between us, we speak over 30 different languages! These include Russian, Tagolog, Hungarian, Farsi, Urdu and many more. We have a lot to learn from each other.

Pupils from Years 1 to 6 have language lessons throughout the year. Pupils grow in confidence as they learn to speak French through songs, stories and interactive lessons. They develop language skills in listening and learn to pronounce words correctly. They practice speaking through games and role play. Key Stage 2 children learn to read sentences and write their own using a language scaffold. They learn how to use a bi-lingual dictionary – a vital skill for when they move to secondary school.

Barnsbury Twinning News!

Barnsbury is a member of the Woking Town Twinning Association (WTTA) and has developed an exciting link with Henri Wallon School in the French town of Le Plessis-Robinson! Year 4 pupils are exchanging letters with their pen friends at Henri Wallon School.

Year 4 are not the only children to enjoy links with schools in other countries: Year 5 pupils have exchanged videos with the French school École Bleriot in Tergnier. We are delighted that our pupils have these opportunities, which give language learning a genuine focus.

Understanding other people in our world is important to us. We appreciate the different festivals people celebrate, the variety of food people eat, the stories they tell and the things they value. These learning opportunities are often embedded in our topics and celebrated in International Week.

We welcome visitors from other countries to our school. During International Week, we welcome parents into our classes to read stories in other languages. If you have another language or culture that you would like to share with us, do let us know – you would be very welcome.
