Our Meadow & Woodlands
Set in attractive grounds the school is proud of its outdoor environment where learning is enriched through a range of facilities including: an outdoor classroom, growing beds, gardens and allotments, a natural pond with decking to enable pond-dipping, a woodland, and a lovely meadow.
The outdoor learning environment supports teaching and learning across the curriculum, as well as providing quality playtime experiences.
Forest School is an opportunity for your child to experience nature and the outdoor environment in a safe, secure and hands-on way. Our ’forest’ is the environmental area on the school grounds, giving plenty of lower level cover (ideal for hide & seek). We are lucky to have such a diverse mixture of trees including Oak, Elm, Willow, Elder and Ash; some of which will be used during our sessions in many different ways. There are old wood piles to attract insects and small mammals, squirrels and birds.
The children are encouraged to investigate & explore but also to respect all living things. Children learn best from first hand experiences by exploring and playing together through a range of activities, leading to great learning opportunities. Forest School builds independence, high self-esteem and team building skills. All sessions are linked to the National Curriculum including Numeracy, Literacy and cross curricular subjects.
Health and safety considerations are always of paramount importance. The children will be using woodland tools. (A personal details & medical record form must be filled out before a child can attend and returned to the office).
The woodland we use is fairly dry but has a lot of sticks and some nettles and brambles underfoot. A base camp area will be available for the comfort and well-being of your child should we have downpours! The following clothing and equipment is essential. Clothing The thickness of clothing will depend on the season; Wellies or waterproof boots are essential, Socks Long trousers/ waterproof over trousers (or a spare pair if wet), Long sleeved top/ jumper, Waterproof jacket, A light water bottle, Hat (summer or winter). An extra layer is useful in the rucksack in case weather changes or wind has a chill. Rain will not cause a cancellation unless accompanied by wind. More thin layers are best for warmth and can always be removed if too warm.
Please use old clothes and let your child know that at forest school they CAN GET DIRTY AND YOU DO NOT MIND! Sun cream should also be applied if weather is sunny. All clothing must be clearly named. Children without adequate clothing will not be able to partake.
